Book Review on The World of Yesterday :: essays research papers fc

The Death of a Soul, The Glance of History And meet the time as it seeks us. Cymberline Before the preface, I saw the sentence adopted from Shakespeare ¡Ã‚ ¯s Cymberline . All of the sudden, a sense of seriousness and heaviness mounted up in my heart. I felt the author ¡Ã‚ ¯s tone of despair and disillusionment.  ¡Ã‚ °at most, one generation had gone though a revolution, another experienced a putsch, the third a war, the fourth a famine, the fifth national bankruptcy ¡Ã‚ But we, who are sixty today and who, de jure, still have a space of time before us, what have we not seen, not suffered, not lived though? ¡Ã‚ ± Such struggling words can only be composed by a writer in unbearable agonies. Actually, the author was forced to witness the most terrible defeat of reason and the wildest triumph of brutality in the chronicle of the ages. What an embarrassing situation it was to an intellectual with great concern for the humanity and morality. Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 in a middle class family in Austria and died at his own hands in 1942 at the age of 60, crossing two centuries, witnessing two contemporary wars. He was well-known as a novelist, a playwright, a biographer a manuscript collector and a pacifist. In 1934, he was exiled to Britain and then to Brazil where he lived his rest of life with his wife. The World of Yesterday is his autobiography written between 1939 and 1940. Zweig always encouraged his friends to set down their reminiscences, not necessarily for publication but for the pleasure and benefit of their children, their families. As for his own autography, he was to  ¡Ã‚ °give some reflection of his life before it sinks into the darkness. ¡Ã‚ ±(P.9) It is not so much an autobiography as a  ¡Ã‚ °biography ¡Ã‚ ± of his time. It is a vivid, moving and nostalgic portrayal of Europe before wars; it is a story about intellectual brotherhood which tried to prevent national madness that destroyed the Europe and the world, twice. In the book, we picture the dramatic progress of material wealth and despairing collapse of morality. It also provides a source for us to know other great figures like Dostoyevsky, Goethe, Tolstoy and Freud who constituted the most glorious and attractive scenery at that time, making the sky not so sad. If we intend to figure out one of the best times in history, there is no doubt that the time before the World War I ¡Ã‚ ªZweig ¡Ã‚ ¯s childhood and youth hood ¡Ã‚ ªis definitely one.

Reason People Change Jobs

If we are compare the labor flexibility of the current generation and 20 years ago. We can see marked differences. Today, people tend to change jobs several within a short period of time in the past. In fact, in some areas they move to another company within a year. I firmly believe that people should change their jobs according to their needs. Several reasons have been identified for this phenomenon. First, the most important reason that motivates a person a change in their field of work is the rapid change of technology. Industries There are those who prefer to work in the latest version of the software, either an accountant or human resource person. Because for their own benefit, need to keep pace with technology. For example, a clinical center and Leon Medical Center have the medical history of their patients fully computerized, no longer use paper folders. As a result, people tempted by jobs offering high wages and employment begin to change according to demand. Therefore, technological progress plays a key role in the employees of the temptation to change its current line of work. Another reason is the urgent need to change their work environment. This is a human tendency that tempts workers to seek something different instead of just one job all his life. Many employees get so bored of your current job field; you do not mind changing jobs, even with a lower salary. For example, there are accountants and IT specialists who are tired of the daily routine of work and sit for about 8 hours, that's when they try to prove work more moved, as vendors or bartenders. For this reason, they tend to attract to jobs that are more animated, as events manager, nightclub and radio jockeys, fashion and wildlife photographer and many more. Therefore, people move to different profiles to bring a change in your routine lifestyle. A third reason that we should not leave out is to seek a wage increase. Find a wage increase is one reason why many people are looking for a job change, no matter even have to move out of town. When people have to deal with accounts payable, that's when you propose to seek a better salary. Even the search for better wages, leads many people to return to study for professional help. Even more in that people tend to lead a socially active life. In a nutshell, changing jobs and field of work is a positive move. Not only it helps in monetary terms but sometimes it provides mental satisfaction to an employee

The Use of Portfolios to Measure Classroom Performance as an Alternative to Mandated Testing â€Å"Teachers teaching to the test† has become an ongoing issue among grade schools around the world. Teachers are changing the curriculum to revolve around standardized testing hoping to ensure good grades on this test. They are obsessed with doing this in order to gain a good reputation for the school and are throwing curriculum out the window. Requiring students to take these mandated tests to evaluate how much knowledge they gain throughout the year is not necessarily accurate. But limiting the students’ absorption of knowledge to strictly the test is not teaching students to think critically. They are unreliable and inaccurate tools of assessment which need to be forever altered. Portfolios being applied in some schools across the United States have transformed education. They are a great metho d of assessment. In a portfolio, a student can generate ideas, show an active display of academic progress, record ideas and opinions that are relevant to what they are learning, reflect strengths and abilities, and they are able to continually revise their work, which shows active learning and critical thinking. Anything can be recorded in one’s portfolio, and the contents show evidence of that student’s intellect and understanding of what is being taught. Literacy is most apparent when you can actually see how the student learns and how they apply their knowledge to each assignment. Each student has a unique way of learning and are by any means not standard. A test can not possibly gauge intellect and therefore should not be enforced. Every student deserves a fair chance at education, but if it is not being handled correctly, students will continue to be cheated at their shot of showing just how intelligent or creative they really are. Many bright students that do poorly on standardized tests get held back from attending their ideal college or university.
